It’s summer and the kids at Harlem Heights Community Charter School (HHCCS) are anxious to explore their new summer reads!
And Literacy for All supports each of the HHCCS students in K through 5 by providing Summer Reading books to every child. Because of generous supporters, we are able to do our part to help each student continue their enjoyment of reading over the break by giving each child a summer reading bag including at least 10 books, a journal notebook and other gift items.
We have also been conducting “Free Book Fridays” each Friday during the school year. We read aloud to each class once a month at which time every student gets to choose one or more books to take home to enjoy and add to their home library.
We are concluding our fifth school year of involvement at HHCCS. Altogether, we have given over 3,700 books to the children this school year and over 8,600 books since the program began.
Working with the enthusiastic support of School Director Dr. Debra Mathinos, we are committed to helping her and her amazing group of teachers to establish a culture of literacy where the joy of reading is shared by all of the children.
We have achieved another major milestone! We have given away over
30,000 free books!
In addition to our programs supporting the children at HHCCS, we also redistribute gently used and new books throughout our community through a combination of our 14 Free Book boxes placed in parks, at elementary schools and other popular community locations, as well as through participation at various community events. And Literacy for All President Mary Corrigan is dedicated to our mission of “building family and community literacy one book at a time.”
Another Awesome Partnership with the Girl Scouts!
And Literacy for All (ALFA) partnered with Girl Scout Troop #267 to repurpose and decorate a newspaper vending box to create this Free Book Box at Gulf Elementary School in Cape Coral. The Girl Scouts worked with school administration to place this Free Book Box where it can be easily accessed by both students and members of the community. The Scouts also conducted a Book Drive resulting in a generous supply of high-quality books to stock the box. The Girl Scouts and ALFA will share the stewardship of this Free Book Box going forward. Creating and stewarding this box helps fulfill the Girl Scouts' community service objective and ALFA's mission of "Building family and community literacy one book at a time."Great job Girl Scouts!
